A Low Pressure Forward Acting Rupture Disc is a non-reclosing pressure relief device specifically designed to protect tanks, vessels, pipelines, and process systems from overpressure conditions at relatively low operating pressures. In a forward-acting design, the process pressure is applied to the concave side of the domed disc. When the system pressure reaches the predetermined burst pressure, the disc ruptures along a precision-scored pattern, providing instantaneous full-bore pressure relief.
Description
Low pressure forward acting rupture discs are commonly constructed as a multi-layer composite assembly consisting of:
- A metallic burst section or laser-scored top section
- A sealing membrane for leak-tight operation
- An optional vacuum or back-pressure support
The burst pressure is controlled through the disc geometry, material thickness, and precision laser scoring, ensuring accurate and repeatable opening performance even at very low pressure settings.
Key Features
- Suitable for very low burst pressures, often from a few millibars upward.
- Fast, instantaneous pressure relief response.
- Non-reclosing, fail-safe operation.
- High leak tightness compared to conventional relief valves.
- Available for gas, liquid, vapor, and two-phase flow applications.
- Corrosion-resistant construction using stainless steel, fluoropolymer, nickel alloys, or specialty materials.
- Optional vacuum supports for systems exposed to vacuum conditions.
- Typical operating ratio up to 80% of the marked burst pressure.
Working Principle
During normal operation, the rupture disc remains intact and seals the process. When pressure exceeds the rated burst pressure, tensile stresses in the disc material exceed its design limit, causing the disc to open along predetermined score lines and rapidly relieve excess pressure. Unlike safety relief valves, rupture discs do not reseal after activation and must be replaced after bursting.
Applications
- Atmospheric and low-pressure storage tanks
- Chemical and petrochemical plants
- Pharmaceutical process equipment
- Pressure vessels and reactors
- Heat exchangers
- Gas handling systems
- Protection of pressure relief valves from corrosive media
